MAKING MURIEL
ABC Arts | 2017 | 58min
It’s been 20 years since Toni Collette’s brilliantly awkward portrayal of ‘Muriel’ burst onto our screens, with her desperate dream to have the perfect wedding and escape dead-end Porpoise Spit.
A generation on, Muriel’s Wedding remains one of Australia’s best-loved and most iconic films. So how do you recreate it for the stage and a new generation? Making Muriel follows acclaimed director PJ Hogan as he collaborates with Australia’s most innovative stage producers, Global Creatures & The Sydney Theatre Company, to turn Muriel’s Wedding into a world-first stage musical.
With unprecedented access to the Sydney Theatre Company, Making Muriel exclusively captures the production from the first open auditions through call backs, workshops and then the final casting rounds.
Making Muriel features interviews with the Muriel’s Wedding stars Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths, stage-show cast including Gary Sweet and Justine Clarke. As well as a never seen before archive with interviews at the home of PJ Hogan and Jocelyn Moorhouse, the film’s producer.
